System designs that hold up as you grow

We design software architectures — services, data, integrations and cloud infrastructure — that match your real load, team size and budget, and document the decisions so they can be built and evolved safely.

  • Right-sized structure
  • Data architecture
  • Cloud infrastructure design

Overview

Architecture is a set of expensive decisions

Software architecture is the set of decisions that are costly to change later: how a system is divided into parts, where data lives and who owns it, how components communicate, how the system is deployed and secured, and how it will cope with growth or failure. These choices shape how quickly a team can build features for years, often long after the original authors have moved on.

There is no universally correct architecture. A well-structured monolith suits most young products and small teams, while separate services can help larger organizations work independently, at the cost of operational complexity. Managed cloud services reduce maintenance but add vendor dependence. Event-driven designs decouple systems but make debugging harder. The right answer depends on your scale, team, budget and risk tolerance.

Good architecture is proportionate, documented and testable. Engineers understand why each decision was made, the system can be deployed safely and often, and the design can evolve as the business does. It is also communicated well. Diagrams, decision records and guidelines let new engineers grasp the system quickly, and give leadership a clear view of where risks and future costs lie.

Who it’s for

Built for teams like yours

  • 01

    Teams starting a significant build

Companies about to commit to a new product or platform who want key structural decisions made deliberately, before code makes them hard and expensive to reverse.

  • 02

    Products hitting growth limits

Businesses whose systems slow down, fail under load or resist new features, and who need to know which changes will relieve the pressure most effectively.

  • 03

    Organizations with sprawling systems

Companies with many applications, integrations and data stores that grew without a plan, needing a coherent target picture and a practical path toward it. Overlapping tools are often consolidated.

Why it matters

The decisions that are hardest to undo

Architecture choices — how you split services, model data, handle authentication and deploy — shape every feature that follows. Get them wrong and each new requirement costs more than the last. We design for the load and team you actually have, avoiding both fragile shortcuts and over-engineered complexity, and leave room for the growth you realistically expect.

Every important choice is recorded with its reasoning and the alternatives considered, so future engineers understand why the system looks the way it does and can change it without guessing.

Every engagement includes

  • Requirements reviewbusiness goals, expected load, data sensitivity and team skills documented first.
  • Current-state assessmentexisting systems, bottlenecks and risks mapped where a system already exists.
  • Target architecturediagrams and written design covering services, data, infrastructure and security.
  • Trade-off analysisalternatives compared openly so you understand the cost of each choice.
  • Implementation roadmapphased steps to reach the target design without disrupting current operations.
  • Team walkthroughsessions with your engineers so the design is understood and owned internally.

Features

Architecture work we deliver

  1. 01

    Right-sized structure

A modular monolith, services or a mix, chosen for your team size and scaling needs rather than fashion.

  2. 02

    Data architecture

Database selection, schema design, caching and data flows planned around how your system reads and writes.

  3. 03

    Cloud infrastructure design

AWS, Azure or Google Cloud environments laid out with networking, scaling and cost controls defined as code.

  4. 04

    Integration patterns

APIs, events and queues designed so your system connects reliably with payment, CRM and partner platforms.

  5. 05

    Security architecture

Authentication, authorization, secrets handling and data protection built into the design rather than patched on later.

  6. 06

    Decision records

Architecture decision records and diagrams explaining what was chosen, what was rejected and why.

In practice

Architecture work we take on

  • Greenfield system design

Before a new build, we define components, data model, integration approach, hosting and security, documented clearly enough for any competent team to implement with confidence. Risky assumptions are tested with small proofs of concept before the main build begins.

  • Scaling an existing platform

We find the real bottlenecks through profiling and load testing, then recommend targeted changes, such as caching, read replicas or job queues, before any wholesale redesign. Each change is measured to confirm its effect.

  • Breaking up a monolith carefully

Where splitting a large application genuinely helps, we identify service boundaries, data ownership and migration order, so the change happens in safe steps rather than a risky rewrite. The application keeps running throughout.

  • Cloud cost and resilience review

We review cloud infrastructure for unnecessary spend, single points of failure, backup gaps and security exposure, then propose changes ranked by impact and effort. Quick wins are separated from larger structural changes so you can act immediately.

Process

How we work

  1. 1

    Quality attributes

We establish what the system must achieve, including expected load, availability needs, data sensitivity, budget and team skills, because these drive architectural choices more than features. These are ranked so conflicts are resolved consistently.

  2. 2

    Current-state mapping

For existing systems we map components, data flows, dependencies and deployment, using code review, diagrams and monitoring data to find where the real constraints and risks lie. Findings are shared before any redesign begins.

  3. 3

    Options & decisions

We develop alternative designs, compare them against the agreed quality attributes, and record each significant choice in an architecture decision record with its trade-offs. Rejected options are recorded as well, so the same debate need not be repeated.

  4. 4

    Prove risky parts

Where a decision carries uncertainty, such as performance or an integration, we build a small proof of concept or run a load test to confirm the approach before teams commit.

  5. 5

    Roadmap & handover

We turn the target design into a staged implementation roadmap and walk your engineers through diagrams, decisions and guidelines so they can build and evolve it. We stay available for questions as building starts.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Anything else about Software architecture? Ask us directly.

  1. Usually not at first. Microservices add operational overhead that small and mid-sized teams often cannot absorb. A well-structured modular monolith gives clear boundaries and can be split into services later if specific parts need independent scaling. We recommend microservices when team size, deployment needs or load patterns genuinely justify them.
