The backend behind accounts, saves and economies

We build game backends for accounts, cloud saves, inventories, virtual currencies, leaderboards and admin tools, using managed services where they fit and custom APIs where your game needs control over data and cost.

  • Cloud saves
  • Economy and inventory

Overview

What a game backend really has to do

A game backend stores what players care about most: their account, progress, items and purchases. It has to be fast enough that menus feel instant, reliable enough that nothing is lost when a phone dies mid-save, and strict enough that a modified client cannot grant itself currency. We design the data model and API contracts first, deciding which actions the server must validate and which data can safely live on the device.

The central buying decision is platform versus custom. Managed services such as PlayFab, Nakama or Firebase provide accounts, storage and leaderboards quickly, but bring pricing models and limits you must live with. A custom backend on your cloud account offers full control over data and cost, at the price of more engineering and operations. Many games combine both. We compare options against your expected player numbers, features and team before recommending one.

A good backend is boring in the best way: versioned APIs, migrations that never lose data, clear logs, and an admin panel your support team can use without engineering help. We also document how each service is deployed and monitored, so your own team can run and recover it confidently after handover.

Who it’s for

Built for teams like yours

  • 01

    Games with persistent progress

Teams whose game needs accounts, cloud saves, inventories or cross-device progress, and who want those systems designed carefully before real players start depending on them every day.

  • 02

    Free-to-play economies

Studios running virtual currencies, stores and rewards that need server-side validation, receipt checks and audit trails to keep the economy fair, auditable and easy for support staff to manage.

  • 03

    Teams outgrowing a quick setup

Games launched on a simple backend that now face cost, scale or flexibility limits and need a planned migration without disrupting live players or losing any of their saved progress.

Why it matters

Player data deserves real engineering

When a player loses a save or a purchase does not arrive, they do not blame the server; they blame your game. We design backends with server-validated transactions, idempotent purchase handling, versioned save data and clear data models, so progress and purchases survive crashes, reinstalls and device changes.

We help you choose between platforms like PlayFab, Nakama or Firebase and a custom stack, based on control, cost and lock-in. Whatever we choose, the accounts, data and source code belong to you, with documentation for running it.

Every engagement includes

  • Backend discoveryfeatures, data model and build-versus-platform decision documented.
  • API designclear contracts between game client and server, versioned for future updates.
  • Secure implementationauthentication, validation and purchase verification built in from the start.
  • Cloud deploymentinfrastructure set up in your AWS, Azure or Google Cloud account.
  • Testingautomated API tests plus load tests at expected player volumes.
  • Handoversource, infrastructure details and operating documentation delivered to you.

Features

Backend services we build

  1. 01

    Accounts and identity

Guest, email and platform sign-in with account linking, so players keep progress across devices.

  2. 02

    Cloud saves

Versioned, conflict-aware save data that survives reinstalls and syncs between devices without losing progress.

  3. 03

    Economy and inventory

Server-validated currencies, items and purchase receipts that resist tampering and duplicate grants.

  4. 04

    Leaderboards and events

Seasonal leaderboards, tournaments and timed events configured from data rather than new client builds.

  5. 05

    Remote configuration

Tune balance, prices and feature flags live without waiting for an app store review.

  6. 06

    Admin and support tools

Dashboards for your team to look up players, grant compensation and review suspicious activity.

In practice

Backend features we build

  • Accounts and cross-device progress

Guest accounts that upgrade to platform or email sign-in, account linking across devices and conflict rules for cloud saves, so players keep their progress when they switch phones or reinstall the game.

  • Virtual economy and store

Currencies, inventories, bundles and offers handled on the server, with receipt validation for app store purchases and an audit log that support staff can search when players report missing items or other problems.

  • Leaderboards, events and tournaments

Global and friends leaderboards, timed events and tournament brackets with scheduled resets, reward distribution and basic checks that flag implausible scores for manual review by your team before rewards are sent.

  • Admin and support panel

A web tool for your team to look up players, grant compensation, edit remote configuration, schedule events and review purchase history, with role-based access and change logs that show who did what and when.

Process

How we work

  1. 1

    Trust mapping

We list every piece of player data and every action, then decide which the server must own and validate, what can live on the device and how each will be versioned.

  2. 2

    Platform comparison

We compare managed services and custom options against your features, expected player counts and cost tolerance, and record the recommendation and its trade-offs in writing so the decision can be revisited later.

  3. 3

    API contracts

Endpoints, request and response formats and error codes are specified before implementation, so client and server developers can work in parallel against the same contract without blocking each other’s progress.

  4. 4

    Build and validate

Services are implemented with authentication, input validation, idempotent purchase handling and automated tests, then deployed to staging for the game client to integrate and test against well before anything reaches production.

  5. 5

    Load-test and launch

We run load tests at expected peak traffic, set up monitoring, backups and alerts, then move to production in your cloud account with documented rollback steps if anything goes wrong on launch day.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Anything else about Game backend? Ask us directly.

  1. Managed platforms get common features running quickly but can limit flexibility and tie you to their pricing. Open-source options like Nakama give more control if you host them. Custom backends suit unusual economies or strict data needs. We compare all three for your feature list and expected scale.
