Overview

Getting print right, not just pretty

Print has constraints that screens forgive. Colors shift between monitors and paper, thin type can fill in on uncoated stock, and anything placed too close to a trim edge risks being cut off. We design with those realities in mind from the first layout, choosing type sizes, color builds and margins that will survive the press as well as the proof.

The biggest decisions are format, paper and finish. A heavier stock or a soft-touch coating changes how a piece feels in the hand, while a folded brochure needs content planned around its panels and the order people open them. We explain how each choice affects readability, mailing weight and lead time, so you can decide where extra spend is worth it.

Good collateral is also built for reuse. We set up files with paragraph styles and master pages, so next year’s price sheet or a new staff member’s card can be updated quickly without starting again. We also keep a record of the paper, finish and printer settings used, so a reprint months later matches the original run. When content changes, you send us the edits and receive updated press files quickly.

In practice

Where print still earns its place

  • Trade show and event handouts

Visitors collect stacks of paper at events. We design compact pieces that summarize your offer quickly, include a clear next step, and look distinct enough to be found again in a bag of competitors’ brochures.

  • Direct mail campaigns

Postcards and mailers must meet postal size and addressing rules while grabbing attention at the mailbox. We design within those mailing requirements and leave space for variable data such as names or offer codes.

  • Company stationery refresh

After a rebrand, stationery is often the most visible leftover. We redesign business cards, letterhead, envelopes, folders and notecards as a matched set, with editable digital letterhead for everyday correspondence.

  • Product and service guides

Catalogs, price lists and instruction booklets carry lots of detailed information. We build clear navigation with sections, tabs and indexes so readers can find a specific item quickly without reading every page.

Process

How we work

  1. 1

    Content gathering

We collect your copy, images, logos and any older versions, then organize them into a content outline. Missing pieces surface now instead of halfway through layout, which keeps the schedule intact.

  2. 2

    Format and stock

We recommend size, fold, page count, paper weight and finish based on how the piece will be used, and confirm technical specifications with your chosen printer before layout begins. Printer input avoids costly surprises later.

  3. 3

    Layout design

We design the cover or first spread to set direction, then flow the remaining pages using a grid and master styles so typography, spacing and imagery stay consistent throughout. Long documents get a table of contents.

  4. 4

    Proofing

You review PDF proofs and mark corrections. For color-critical work, we recommend a physical proof from the printer, since screens cannot show exactly how ink sits on the chosen paper.

  5. 5

    Press files

We output press-ready PDFs to the printer’s specification, with bleed, crop marks, embedded fonts and correct color profiles, plus a lighter digital version for email and downloads. Files are checked with a preflight before sending.
