Why site speed and Core Web Vitals matter for rankings, conversions and user experience.
Speed feels like a technical concern, so it often gets deprioritized. But every extra second a page takes to load costs you real conversions, and search engines now factor speed into rankings. A slow site is a business problem wearing a technical costume.
What Core Web Vitals measure
Google distilled “is this page a good experience?” into three measurable signals:
- LCP (Largest Contentful Paint) — how fast the main content appears. Aim for under 2.5 seconds.
- INP (Interaction to Next Paint) — how quickly the page responds when someone taps or clicks. Aim for under 200ms.
- CLS (Cumulative Layout Shift) — how much the page jumps around as it loads. Aim for under 0.1.
Together they capture the difference between a site that feels instant and one that feels sluggish or janky.
Where the time usually goes
For most sites the biggest culprits are predictable: oversized images, too many third-party scripts, render-blocking code, and bloated page builders or plugins. The good news is that the biggest wins are also the most boring ones.
The high-impact fixes
- Compress and right-size images — serve modern formats (WebP/AVIF) at the size they’re actually displayed. This alone fixes many slow sites.
- Lazy-load below-the-fold media so the first screen loads first.
- Cut third-party scripts — every chat widget, tracker and embed has a cost. Keep only what earns its place.
- Cache aggressively and use a CDN so repeat visits and distant visitors are fast.
- Reserve space for images and ads so content doesn’t jump (fixing CLS).
Measure it honestly
Test with PageSpeed Insights and, better, real-user data from Search Console — a lab score on your fast laptop hides what a customer on mobile data actually experiences.

Treat speed as a conversion lever, not a chore. Fixing image weight, scripts and caching often lifts both rankings and sales without touching a single word of your copy.
